Birth Control

As the advancements in birth control methods have increased throughout the years, so have the number of options that are available to women. Today there are more than 15 types of birth control to choose from, including hormonal-based contraceptives (such as birth control pills), barrier-method contraceptives (such as condoms and diaphragms) including:

  • Nexplanon®: Nexplanon, from Merck, is a small (4cm) rod-shaped subdermal implant that is placed in your upper arm area. This implant will provides up to three years of continuous pregnancy prevention. It can be removed when you are ready to conceive and fertility rated will return to normal level within a few weeks.  Dr. Haug has received the training required for Nexplanon.
  • Mirena®: Mirena is an intrauterine contraceptive that offers women a great alternative from traditional IUC's. With Mirena patients only have to perform a self-check once a month to ensure it's still properly placed. Delivering tiny amounts of hormones directly to the uterus, Mirena has proven to be more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. It offers effective birth control for up to five years or until you are ready to begin conceiving.
  • Depo-Provera: Made up of a hormone similar to progesterone, Depo-Provera is a contraceptive injection (birth control shot) that is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. The shot is delivered in the arm or buttocks and is effective for up to 14 weeks per shot, although patients must return every 12 weeks to stay fully protected.
